About Piranha Arts

Piranha Arts is well rooted in the mother city for the never ending Karneval der Kulturen. Since 1987 we have been on the road as organizers, curators, consultants, publishers and multipliers, whether in our home neighborhood of Kreuzberg or around the globe.

In Berlin and beyond, we have initiated several groundbreaking festivals and projects over the years: "Heimatklänge", "SOS Racisme", "Clubs United", "Beat! Apartheid", "Fête de la Musique", "Totem & Tabu", "C3 - ClubContemporaryClassical", the "Nights of Ramadan" or "Classical:NEXT".

WOMEX has been traveling across Europe to changing venues since 1994. The leading international professional network for the global underground now attracts over 3,000 delegates from 100 countries worldwide.

As a consultancy, we combine our in-house know-how with that of the music capital Berlin to advise creative initiatives between cultures, whether at home or in the global south of our home planet Earth. This also includes expert consulting and development of regional exchange platforms such as Primera Linea in Havana, MOST for the Balkans or Afropollination with the Nyege Nyege Festival at the sources of the Nile.

Piranha Records & Publishing carries new sounds and artists* from all over the world via Kreuzberg, including e.g. Fanfare Ciocarlia, The Klezmatics and Stella Chiweshe, as well as Berlin topics like "Balkan Beats", Alan Bern's "Semer" monument, or Sister Fas FGM campaign.

The Karneval der Kulturen as the largest manifestation of cultural diversity in Germany and Berlin's No.1 street parade is now also a permanent fixture. With the "Long Night of Soundsystems" as the mother of all KdK after-parade parties, leadership of the carnival jury, CD releases on the carnival or participation in "Sapucaiu No Samba" and other parade groups, the rhizomes of both sides were already closely intertwined since the premiere of the Karneval der Kulturen in 1996. Since 2016, the Karneval der Kulturen has been firmly established at Piranha Arts due to the desire of the carnival performers for the happiness of both sides. We inspire each other, the carnival is integration in action. It's about the shared joy of creating this celebration for Berlin and laughing together - right now.

"Carnival has the power to evoke hearty laughter even from the most constipated. True ambilavent and universal laughter that does not deny complexity, but affirms it. A laughter that purifies from dogmatism; that frees from fascism and pedantry, from fear and intimidation, from didacticism, naivety and illusion, from the only meaning, from sentimentality. A laughter that restores the almighty, ambivalent wholeness of our existence."
